Can you still tan if you have fake tan on?

Unfortunately I am as pale as a stick of chalk so I do put some fake tan on occasionally if I'm on a night out, however the stuff is hard to get of so I'm wondering will it make a difference if it's still on me when I'm sunbathing, will it stop me getting a colour? Is it true when people say the sun will prolong the colour of the fake tan?
